Isn't there an option in the preferences to turn off automatic version checking? I dont have an install in front of me here, but I thought that was a feature that could be turned off.. This became especially desirable when the version checking was going to the sourceforge site and the site was having problems... Anyway I think you can just turn off the auto version checking and you will be good to go..
