Well of course buying a DF is the best answer. Does your friend have
children? Have one kid on each of the spark plug wires and tell them they
are just holding them out of the way while to turn the engine over. The kids
that don't jump several feet in the air will be holding the defective wires.
Another solution, although not as much fun, is to switch the spark plug
wires with known good ones and see if that is the problem. Then go to the
coils and make sure they are both hot. If both sides of the electronic
ignition are working, then switch the spark plugs around. If that does not
solve the problem, look at the timing. Of course if the timing is correct,
then you may have a fuel starvation problem to the cylinders. That's the way
I would go in checking it out. Another point to keep in mind: it is not
recommended starting on both the mag and electronic ignition at the same
time. The timing is not the same for both.
Now if you would like to entertain the purchase of a DF I have one for sale.
>Ok everybody, lets start a process of elimination list about magnetoes
>and electronic ignitions. A good freind of mine has a cozy, with both of
>these ignitions on it. The problem is this, we tryed to start it for the
>first time yesterday and we had all kinds of troubles, i will list the
>problems and failed trouble shooting tips for each below, we are out of
>ideas on what to do next so I told him I would present the problems to
>the list and see what Ideas you guys would have:
>
>1.prob- engine is a 0-320 that will only run on number 1 and 4 cylinders
> (both are closest to the prop)
>explanation- the top of each cylinder is fired buy the light-speed
>electronic ignition, the bottom of each is fired buy the mag. after
>further trouble shootting we found out that the mag. is not working
>
>prob.- mag not working
>
>trouble shoot- disconnected the p-lead and started the plane then we
>shut the electronic ign. off, and the plane shut off.the reason we did
>this is to make sure the mag was not shorting out.
>
>prob.- there is two coils on the electronic ignition, one for each side
>of the engine. each coil has two outputs, one for each cylinder. only
>one coil was giving out spark.
>
>troub. shoot- we took the coils and switched them side for side. We got
>the same results. This told us that both coils were good.
>
>I dont know if we are over looking somthing simple or not, and i am sure
>that we checked the dumb stuff( i think ) so after two days of some
>serious deppression, we are open for suggestions. I told him he should
>sell it and buy a D-FLY but he didnt find that funny. His answer was the
>engine is on the wrong end. Well I hope some of you have good Ideas to
>try, If you dont feel like typing you can call or give me your number
>and I will call you to discuss this further......thanks Brian
