Her hiding place was deep within the Forest, the area memorised by landmarks
and the stars in an ever changing terrain. She had learned that some Forest
landmarks never changed position, such as the ancient grandfather tree,
perhaps too old and set in his ways. If she found a secret place close to
one of these landmarks then the items she wanted stashed would still be
there next time she sought them.

Here in her hiding place was an old rag doll with one eye missing and
anything precious it might contain in its stuffed areas and torn places.
Here too were a stack of old diaries pertaining to a life that she had led
and had not led. She was Shyne Blake, the girl who had lived in Drache and
worked as a messenger for the Royal Guard there. She was not Shyne Blake
who had lived on the Isle of Mysts and had borne two children, delivered by
a rogue called FastTalk ip Lancan and a former slave girl called Lashette.

This Shyne had entered a Forest on a routine journey from Drache to a nearby
village and had never found her way out. In some strange twist of fate or
perhaps a reaction of the Forests own magic to barely awakened fires of
ability in Shyne, she had become two girls. They were the same girl and yet
were shaped by following different paths. One went forward to Mysts and to
a life of wealth and a death in some distant future. The other remained
here in the Dark Wood, a captive of its magic and its Deity. She had tried
to leave and could not. In fact the elements of the magic that had made her
two women might even prevent it. Perhaps it knew that she might die if she
set foot beyond the line of trees because she shouldn't truely exist as two
at all. That this Shyne's only existance was here. In some ways it was
what she would have wanted because here she was just Shyne, no Kurakolis, no
magic, the Forest saw to that. Time in the Forest was blurred and allowed
information to filter to it's present from possible pasts and futures that
were all entwined and yet equally changable by new and ongoing events.

She was aware in part of this strange phenomenon because of the diaries she
had read. Shyne had always been an avid diary keeper because of her lack of
education. Over the years she had lived in Drache and then on Mysts her
writing and reading abilities approved with the help of her diaries. The
evidence of her improvement was there from the earliest difficult scrawls to
the neat and well developed script of later years. In a strange irony she
had Dawn to thank for the information of her other life. Dawn was the
servant of Ethan who wanted him as a lover and wanted little more than
Shyne's removal from existance or at the very least from Ethan's heart. She
tried to convince him that this other Shyne was not -his- Shyne and had
passed the diaries to Shyne in a vain hope that she would hanker for a
former life and leave in search of friends of lovers detailed in the
writings of a lifetime.

"I loved him and he didn't know I existed .. then he became my teacher and
the relationship was bittersweet with the torture of a burning want that
could never be.."

"My first friend she was, the one who saw the big heart beyond the gruff and
grime. He betrayed her and her baby died, I ache for her and wish that I
could dim her pain."

"This thing, this creature who haunts the city I love, this evil waiting to
strike is my father, flesh of my flesh.."

"He betrayed me in my own home, it was better to part on easy terms and
safer for him. I can feel the power growing. I can feel my father closing in
on me.."

"Another lamb, another friend. So I must keep myself at arms length from
her because she chooses a man I know might destroy her and I don't want to
watch it happen."

"My lover, my mate is all that I want and yet he longs to destroy all that I
am. Can I be strong at the most bitter end when the apocolipse comes? Must
I choose with him or against him? He who fathered my children."

She had read the snippets of another life, a future life she had never lived
and far from fleeing to it, as Dawn had hoped, she stayed here in the dark
wood fleeing from it and hiding out.

Now Shyne Blake grovelled in the dirt once more, seeking the diaries and a
name. FastTalk ip Lancan. She had escaped from Fenrir's lair fully
intending to return while he held Elenor's soul in the palm of his claws but
not before she sent a letter.

The creature Fenrir, now styled King of the Forest had taken her friend and
protege, Elenor, to twist for his own wicked purposes. But Shyne was aware
he could be defeated. She was not one for Gods and worship and didn't think
to appeal to his Goddess for help. She appealed instead to an old friend if
you could call him friend. Something she had heard way back on Mysts was
that FastTalk had once destroyed Fenrir. She needed him and he owed her.

A hastily written letter scripted in an untidy hand on grubby, soiled paper
was delivered for one FastTalk ip Lancan at the inn he was known to
frequent, the den of his pirate wife.

Shyne Blake
Aran Forest
North of the Red Forest

Dear Fast,

You owe me.

I have business involving a certain treasure I am seeking that might
interest you and I know the whereabouts of a personage your Dire might like
to find. Magic doesn't work here, you'd like it.

Find me.

Shyne
