Isles of Myst Brookshire Keep
Leaning against the sill of the large window, one could look out over the small garden behind the house. In the middle of the garden stood a well, quite a rare thing for a piece of common property. Inside, a double fireplace along the long wall heated both this room and the next, the kitchen with a mud room and the front entrance. Down the hall from the main room were two smaller rooms, also sharing a fireplace between them. The house stood with a small barn, alone on an expanse of sparsely wooded land in the northern section of Brookshire. All in all, as houses go, it was nice. It was a bit of a travel into town, but quiet with a few neighbouring houses. Sure it wasn't in the greatest shape. It hadn't been inhabited for a year, well, except by field mice. And the roof, like most others in this area, needed thatching. That had helped somewhat with the price. The house would be nearly a year's wage over the next two years, but that didn't concern Rue Denali, Captain of the Royal Guard, Brookshire Division. What concerned him was that the purchase would need the final approval of Duke Branton, as did all purchases of land in Brookshire Keep, and the realtor had commissioned another fee to assure it happened. Except on two formal occasions, the two had never sat in one another's presence. Rue had made it clear that his guard division was in shambles when he arrived at the end of the summer. Although the Royal Guard was under the direct attention and funding of the Lord Marshall and the Queen, Rue held the opinion that the Duke certainly hadn't gone out of his way to help the situation any. He was too busy with his empty coiffures and merchants. Rue Denali sat upon the cold stone hearth, bracing his arms on his knees. He hoped Brin would feel comfortable here once it was fixed up. That's all he wanted for her, comfort, when all he'd done was cause her pain. Since she told him she was going to have his child, Rue had been plagued with thoughts about his dead mother and heavy shoulders of guilt. Mostly at night, either when he couldn't sleep or in nightmares. His mother would appear larger than life, a dark gypsy beauty, crying and shouting over his head about how he needed to care for his child. And how Brin would end up like her if he wasn't careful. He needed to make amends. Faced with this constant message, Rue's position on the matter solidified more each day. Despite Lani's unhappiness about it, he could see little choice otherwise. He couldn't imagine living without Lani in his life, but he also knew he'd rather die than have anything happen to Brin and the baby. With a sigh of weariness, the young captain stood up and left the house that would soon belong to his child and the mother of his child. He had to get back into town and send a missive off to Brin about the house. And he might as well send an announcement to his father up in Larmian too. No doubt the old man would keel over at the news. No one ever thought there'd be another generation of Denalis. the_____________end A brief background on Rue Denali: http://www.dragonmyst.f2s.com/char/rue.html "It sounds cold, but it's not cold," he explains. "I mean, what the truth in life is, you need failures, you need tough times to get any kind of value on what's important to you and what's not. There's no way around it."
