Caelan Rainier sighed as she pulled a folded parchment from her skirt's
pocket. How many times has she read it now? It was ridiculous, but she just
couldn't see a cure for it. She was absolutely hopeless, no matter what she
told herself. As she unfolded the letter, she dropped herself into the
cushioned, rigid chair at her desk.
Resting her elbows on the desk, she stared at the note spread out in front
of her. It was more then a pleasant surprise to have recieved it, she was
ecstatic... for the first few minutes.
Phrases stuck out at her. "I've been wanting to go home. Not just because
of... everything else, ..." she wondered over and over again about what that
meant, but in the end, another sentence stilled the flutter of her heart.
"...bloody bastard's already leeching enough of her time." She wasn't
entirely dense. At first she didn't notice it... but now she knew she didn't
hold a flame to Janessa.
She folded the letter in half and set it to one side as she found fresh
paper, ink, and quill and started to write her reply in her neat, scrolling
script.

Dear Fox,
I'm not very big on personal letters myself, but I can't tell you how happy
I was to get your letter. It made my day, really. Dora had just finished
harrassing me when it arrived. I don't think she'll ever change. I do snap
back at her... but I can never think fast enough to make sure they sting as
much as her comments do.
Things have been quiet here. For the most part. I haven't seen much of Lady
Concordia, to tell the truth. But from the papers, people are getting
anxious for the queen to return. How many weeks has it been? It's been more
then a few months now that you've been gone. The Queen really shouldn't
leave her throne for so long, should she? I pray it isn't a whole year until
all of you return.
We had a theif here a few weeks back. Our only excitement in a while. He
chose my room of all places. I thought I had heard something on my balcony,
but passed it off to nothing instead of alerting the guards. Stupid thing to
do. I haven't heard the end of it, believe me. He broke in, and I tried to
stop him... I did get a few good knocks in... but, I know... I'm lucky I
didn't get my throat slit. The bastard cut open my shirt instead and just
left me there tied and gagged for the next person to find. It was Dora that
did, and I was glad for it, thinking that I'd just get leers and stares if
it was one of the guys. But Dora just won't let me live it down. And Gary is
dead set on trying to find the guy... but he didn't leave a thing for him to
trail. All he took was a little jewelry, I didn't have much to begin with.
I know I've mentioned it before, but I wish the Queen would think of more
then herself. I can't believe she would sneak out on you out there. It just
upsets me. It shouldn't so much, but it does. She could be toying with
people's lives. She'll never be like her father if she doesn't start
thinking of consequences. Be careful, okay? I'd hate it if anything happened
to any of you.
I went to the Hideaway yesterday, and let your sister know how you were
doing, and she said she would pass the news on. She gave me a weird look
that I got your letter and not her. But I suppose it's better then the
teasing you're getting from the guys.
I miss you. I wouldn't dare be foolish enough to bring up my attraction to
you again, but I just miss having a friend around. A friend that doesn't
care what color their toenails are and who doesn't have their nose
constantly in a book. It's not nearly so much fun to steal treats from the
kitchen by myself.
I suppose I best be going. I'm sure I've rambled more then enough. Just take
care of yourself, alright? Please? Write me back, if you can. And come home
soon.
Love,
Cael
