It was nearing dawn, the time of day she loved the best. Her mother used to say that it was because she'd been born at the crack of dawn. The memory always made her smile and this time was no different, but the smile was a bit worn around the edges.
The crunch of Dee Dee's hooves in the icy snow and the puff of her breath created a rhythm that lulled her. She was back on patrol, back doing what she loved. She'd been checked over by the guard cleric who'd pronounced her 'fit as a fiddle'. Physically. Emotionally .. things were still rough. She didn't cry in her sleep any more, though the nightmares still plagued her. She and Andor were slowly getting to know each other again, creating a routine that was comforting, but it wasn't like it was .. wasn't like when they'd first met. She she wished .. wished with all her heart that it was. She told herself though, that they were creating something new .. something stronger than mere physical attraction. The fact that they'd both survived the miscarriages with their relationship intact, no matter how shabby the fabric might be, was something, and she did love him. She shifted in the saddle and pulled her horse to a stop. The guard was getting an overhaul. Captains had been sacked as well as other guards .. Rue being one of them. In a distant part of her heart she felt sorry for what he'd lost .. but he'd brought it on himself in a way. Andor had never been to blame for any of the tragedies that had befallen them, he'd tried everything within his power to help in every way he could think of. She gave herself a shake and gritted her teeth. She was sick to DEATH of thinking about it .. worrying it like a sore tooth. She'd never forget it, but she refused to keep chasing it around in her mind again and again. She had bigger things to worry about, like the Wyvern Gang. She'd read the reports, and she believed as the other guards did, that they weren't gone, simply in hiding. They'd managed to pull off a takeover of the Inn and the capture of guards with hardly any trouble. That didn't say allot for the Isles law keeping abilities. Brin reached out and stroked the mares cold mane with a gloved hand and turned her around back toward the Mysthaven guardhouse. Her shift was over and she needed to get back and make a report before she headed home, even if it was to say 'nothing happened'. She was looking forward to getting home and curling up beside the fire with Andor, a cup of hot, spiked cider to help her sleep. He always made sure he was up when she came home, and she enjoyed the quiet time, talking with him about her night and his. She gave Dee Dee a soft nudge in the side and rider and horse cantered toward the guardhouse, both leaving trails of vapor behind them, and in the back of her mind, she wondered what rue was doing these days. -- To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives & Other DMI Lists: http://islesofmyst.com/lists.php3
