Midnight
3 miles south of the DragonMyst Inn, secluded woods

"Gryphons are portrayed with a lion's body, an eagle's head, long ears, and
an eagle's claws, to indicate that one must combine intelligence and
strength in unity..."

Mule waited with what seemed like the patience of a saint, but really it was
just the hazy delay of a madman as he dismissed the others in the group.
They moved back toward their horses through the smoky haze that clung in the
air around the hollowed-out oak tree that had apparently been a camp for a
cell of the Wyvern Gang. Now abandoned and burned, it stood like a smoky
symbol of the future that would come for those who broke the law on this
Isle.

Mule glanced to the one Wyvern gang member he held harshly by the throat
even though the young lad was bound at the wrists. His feet were still free
to kick and Mule pressed his fingers against the lad's windpipe a bit more
to ensure such a possibility didn't happen. The scum had been purchased
handsomely through a bounty hunter by chance, but the bastard had given
little information worth his price. Except for the names of his leaders, he
was useless. Even his own gang would not take him back now, rather they
would slaughter the man for what he might have said.

Mule was absolutely annoyed, to say the least. He was pissed that the
informant had done next to no informing. He was livid that a member of his
own group was still not listening to him, let alone still threatening him.
Threats from someone who just a mere few weeks ago wanted to seek out any
Wyvern gang member they could find and slice off their balls, regardless of
whether or not it was a lawful thing to do.

What an oddball bunch Mule had managed to gather together. Out for revenge,
out for justice, yet some of them didn't quite have the concept right, in
his opinion. Yes, he had some crew who were willing to seize the Wyvern and
crush them. But he had others as well who felt the need to argue his every
move. But maybe that's what happens when you mix one-part citizen with
three-parts nasty business. Perhaps it was time to seek some new recruits to
add to the group dedicated to ridding the Isles of the Wyvern Gang.

He'd take care of that later. Right now, he had to deal with a useless
former member of the Wyvern Gang. And he intended to go about it as cleanly
as possible. Mule watched his group disband and then he went on alone toward
MystHaven, making the Wyvern Gang member jog his trotting horse under the
darkness of the new moon.

Center Square
MystHaven city
3:00am

"It's not easy to hide
all this damage inside
I'll carry it with me
'til I'm not alive"

There in the Center Square, Mule met Sithin as had been previously planned.
The two cloaked individuals exchanged no words. Hood drawn deeply over his
features and gloves upon his hands, Mule quickly stripped the scumbag's
shirt off with a sharp blade. Mule held the gang member down, his foot upon
his throat as Sithin sat upon the bastard and carved a W into the skin
beneath the gang member's right collarbone. The gang member's screams were
muffled by the muddy gag pressed over his mouth before he passed out under
the pain.

Mule chained the gang member to the hangman's platform, as hanging him
seemed impossible to conduct with just him and Sithin. Then he brought the
dagger up and diagonally across the lad's chest, a wound deep enough for the
gang member to bleed to death by dawn, if not sooner. At his feet as the
blood started to pool, Mule tossed out small piece of ivory parchment with a
black fighting gryphon silhouette.

He leaned in and yanked back the lad's hair to whisper the words printed on
the back of the silhouette, "Hunting season on the Wyvern has begun."

Mule and Sithin parted in separate directions and soon vanished from the
square.

~*~ the end ~*~

"Fight and you may die. Run and you may live, for a while. And dying in your
bed many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from
this day to that, for one chance, just one chance to come back here as young
men, and tell our enemies that they make take our lives, but they will never
take our freedom?!"
