Ellurian-born grubballer Io Balzek sat at a
familiar spot in the empty confines of Molentia
Circle. The bench was quite familiar to him, as he
spent the majority of the game time there, and, for
the past week, he had spent much of the practice time
there, too, waiting for his turn to play forschbowler,
or for the team to run laps, or generally for the nine
hells to freeze over so he could get a chance.
Balzek respected player/coach Gorben the Something
because he had played against him, but it was
impossible to tell what his coach thought of him
because Balzek didn't know commonspeak. And common
was an impossible, baffling language that really
sounded idiotic to him. However, he was a land of
"commas", so he felt that he should try to learn it,
and he was picking up a lot of profanity and he knew
the names for the player positions. Luckily, the word
"grubball" was based on the Ellurian word "groba" so
it was easily recognisable.
"Balzek!" Gorben the Something hollered from across
the field as he pointed to midfield, "Blah blah blah
something blah blah!"
"Yea boss," Balzek chirped as he popped off of the
bench and trucked toward home circle with his head
down. As he approached his familiar position on the
field, he noticed that Ware the Something was already
there.
   "Balzek!" Gorben yelled, "Something something
hinterplodder!"
Akel the Ellurian turned and looked at him,
smirking. "Boss says to play hinterplodder, young
one."
"Hinterplodder?" Balzek stood still in confusion.
"You better do it fast," Akel urged, "Or he's going
to have you sit on the bench again."
Balzek darted over to centerfield and took the
empty postion at hinterplodder-right, standing behind
the girl-player Anika the Something and beside Arving
Brons. They faced the hinterplodders of the practice
squad, Otto the Something and two other guys he didn't
recognise.
"Yea boss we go now," Balzek chattered as he took
his stance. It felt strange, but least it wasn't the bench.
