Ken -
If you have the "low capacity" INJ cable, (all that I have seen have white insulators in the RCA jacks,) they should show only minimal drop-off between "Separate" and transceive either way.
Two things. Have you tried doing the injection trimmer alignment with them cabled together. The procedure in the manual is an attempt to "compensate" for the cable, assuming you don't have the "other" unit.
When switching to transceive with the early units, and some later ones, you may have to repeak the Preselector and RF Tune controls slightly for maximum sensitivity/output.
If you have the capability to measure the capacitance of your INJ cable, it should measure less than 60 pF as opposed to the typical 100-110 pF of a standard audio patch cable.

Hello again my fellow Drake mavens,
One final issue concerning operation of my "new" twins (R4 and T4X) using the "regulation" Drake RCA
"injection" jumper.... I cannot get the R4 to be up to snuff in
sensitivity (down almost 4 "S" units) when selected to Xmtr for frequency
control (I have tweaked up the injection trimmers according to the
manual)
and the T4X drops to 60% power when transceiving off the R4 VFO ( I
tweaked the T4X too). They both work normally off their own VFO/injection
circuits!....any ideas you wizened old guys???
