I have been given a Drake R8 to evaluate for a friend. The first thing I noticed about it is the extremely large amount of noise on the speaker/headphones (white noise) with no signal present. Pre-amp is selected off. I initially thought that it was local noise, but it is still present at exactly the same level with the antenna unplugged. Noise increases even more with pre-amp switched on. I am used to almost no noise at all with antenna unplugged on my R4C. I don't remember ever hearing such a noisy receiver with no signal present. Noise is present in all modes (obviously FM is even greater, but this is as expected).
Could anyone with an R8 confirm whether this is normal? If not, what could be the cause. It makes listening to any signal extremely tiring! Comments/tips gratefully received.
