Peter, I have not done this on the R-4x series, and am just getting ready to do it on my AC-4 power supply, but I have done it on several older BCB table radios. It's always worked out pretty well depending on the capacitor in question. 1. You have to be careful about selecting the proper caps to ensure that they will fit nicely into the shell of the original; a little "breathing room" is desirable. 2. Radial leads are preferable to axial. This way you can tie all the negative leads together and keep the positive leads separate. If the can was taken apart carefully you can use the original phenolic base and it's mounting lugs and solder tabs, thus retaining the original appearance. 3. The higher the voltage capability on the caps, the bigger. Try to stick as close to the original voltage as possible in order to keep the size down. 4. I've never looked at mine, but the cap on the R-4 should hopefully not have any wax sealing it, which is a good thing.
