Could be you are right Evan. I'm happy with an equivalent myself. I did a little work on duplicating an FS-4 a few years ago, but my results weren't as good as Steve's. His may even be better than the FS-4 performance wise.

The people paying $500 for an FS-4 don't want clones. I inquired about cloning the 1544 and 1548 to link the R7 with TR-7. I think I got two inquiries to my request. So people pay up to $250 for a cable, aluminum box, and $15 worth of parts. Hard to figure except that people do in fact want an original, not equivalent capability.
