Thought I should share this, see below. Bryan ZL2AFT has just made it onto the DXCC Honour Roll. Amongst other things, a tribute to the reliablity and servicability of tube era equipment. Am not on the Drake reflector, think someone should pass the news on. 73 Barry end Barry Kirkwood PhD ZL1DD Signal Hill Homestay 66 Cory Road Palm Beach Waiheke Island 1240 NEW ZEALAND ph/fax 64-9-372-5161 <http://www.waiheke.co.nz/signal.htm>www.waiheke.co.nz/signal.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Bryan Anderson To: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>DX Reflector Sent: Saturday, May 15, 2004 11:20 AM Subject: [NZDXR] Gear Hi Baz Did the first 140 countries back in the late 60's to early 80's with home brew receiver and filter type SSB rig with many long nights were spent constructing, when a bunch of guys used to gather on 80m after tea at night to help each other solve problems, about the time Warren Robinson was constructing the WR300's (which I acquired one of in recent years). In those days I used a 40m V beam at 50' east west beaming with open wire feed line on all bands. But could never work an African ? Hence the Quad, a 2el boomless tribander, described in May 1983 Break-In which was totally rubbished by the ZL Antenna Intelligentsia in spite of still remains up there 25 years later with only a rotator change and the addition last year of elements for 17m. 1982 Gary ZL2SO picked up in the USA a pair of near new Drake C Line twins for me for US$500 and they have not been out of action for more than hour since. Four years ago I picked up the late ZL2BT's L4B which I run in the tune position with a lot of ALC when occasionally used. In the SSB position the shack lights "blink" but in a pile up they seem to come back on the first call, can't understand it ? Bryan --- Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
