"Peter Hoon" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterence to the drakelist gang ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sent some questions to W2IHY about his his 8 band EQ, and his soon to be released 8 band EQ Plus that will have speech compression added. At his web site, he has audio demonstrations of his products. I have no personal or commercial connection with W2IHY; found out about him on this list. Here, FYI, is each question with W2IHY's answers:
Q1: I have no idea whether the Xtal element in the 25 year old soom to be restored D104 mike is any good. If it is bad, can you recommend a replacement for use with the EQ? A Heil element replacement will soon be possible. Which one should I order, if replacement is recommended? A1: I would recommend an HC5 cartridge if you will be using the element in the D104. Q2: Back in the 60s and 70s, DX Engineering made a module to be added to the T4X/T4XC which did RF speech compression/processing. Does your unit do audio "speech compression"? I am not clear as to how RF speech compression/processing would compare on the air to the use of the W2IHY - EQ, which is done at audio levels. Can you enlighten me? A2: My 8 Band EQ is not a speech compressor. The 8 Band EQ is an equalizer that allows you to focus your audio in particular frequency ranges. The overall effect is louder and clearer audio. The EQ plus is an audio speech processor. This unit increases the average audio output and makes the audio and signal louder. RF processors start cutting the low end audio response off at around 300 Hz. My Speech processor does not cut off the lows so one still hears full range audio out of the compressor. Q3:Am in no rush. Gather you are comming out with a new unit in September. What differences will it have compared to the current production EQ model? A3: See the answer to question #2. The EQ plus also has effects properly adjusted so that the effects add brightness to the audio. If you go to my web site you can hear a demo of the EQ plus with the 8 band EQ connected. In the demo I turn on and off each stage so you can hear the value of each item. Q4: I have rarely used a linear up to now, but have a restored QRO technologies DX 2500 which has a loud squirel fan. Listening to your web site demos, I am impressed by the amount of noise reduction the EQ is capable of. It may well be that I would be better off with your EQ unit, than RF speech compression/processing in light of shack noise, anyway. Your thoughts appreciated. A4: If you use a RF speech processor and do not have a noise gate or downward expender the speech processor will amplify all sounds coming into your mic. Your amplifier noise will be heard stronger on the air with the compressor on. If you use my 8 band EQ with the amplifier and turn on the noise gate amplifier, noise will not he amplified because the gate will shut it off before it gets to the compressor. My EQ Plus has a compressor and downward expander (which works like a noise gate to stop the amplification of background noise). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- On Behalf of "Peter Hoon" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Submissions: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: http://www.zerobeat.net Brought to you courtesy of TLCHost.net http://www.tlchost.net/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------
