Yep, always better to exhaust air out of and away from any heat source, UNLESS it is designed for forced air cooling.
Most efficient, barring other considerations, to exhaust air UP to aid normal convection. Having the fan on the back is usually more esthetically pleasing, and is a reasonable compromise.
