You need to preload the counter to read correctly, something the AADE kit already does. The bigger question is why bother at all. The R-4C dial accuracy is more than adequate for the purpose. If you do decide to go with a frequency counter, it is imperative that it NOT be powered from the R-4C internal supply as it is already marginal to begin with and any additional load would overtax the supply.
