The other good idea is of Garey, that states that when you fire a boatanchor, stayng in front of it, watching meters, looking for smoke or other signals of bad behaviour is a strongly recomended attitude! If a list will be made, I suggest to start ( of course) with " negative bias capacitors" !! I hope to see soon other inputs for a list such this one!

I agree fully with this idea. Never assume that something is working just because someone claims it does. They may not necessarily be trying to mislead anyone in making such a claim but simply lack the knowledge to be observant and sell it as working. Maybe I’m too optimistic. There could be other reasons for failure since a lot can happen between the bias supply connection, the power connector, and the circuits the bias supply goes to. For example, I recently fixed a TR-4 which a bad Cinch-Jones socket that was making intermittent contact with the plug due to years of storage. The caps were fine. How did I know this? Because I jumpered the plug to bypass the AC line switch and slowly brought up the line voltage on the variac the AC-4 was plugged into. A quick voltage check revealed the supply was working properly but no voltage on the other of the socket. After 30 years, contacts oxidize, whether they may be pots, switches, relay contacts, or connectors. Shotgun replacement just because someone says it should be done is not the mark of a good technician.
