of course, as the ranks of ham radio ops shrink,
the demand , and prices, will go down for all equipment.
in ten more years that prized tr7a will only cost a few bucks!!
good reason i guess not to actively recruit or look for ways to
encourage new hams, gotta work at getting the prices of equipment
down!!
not retired,
Don

In my humble opinion eBay is a good thing
Me too!
We ALL know that the good-old-boy-CLIQUE of Hamfest-aficionados
arrive at the HamFest at 6AM (or earlier), before it officially
opens, and attend the pre-fest breakfast gathering, at some local
choke-and-puke, at Oh-Dark-30, and each knows every other license
holder for a 1,000 miles+ radius.
Those folks naturally have a leg-up on ANY and EVERYONE else (who
have lives) who might like to enter the Drake world by buying a nice
set of C-Line twins, etc. (like the NEWBIES and youngsters that those
same folks CLAIM hamfests are doing such a favor for, even)! These
might include some OM who has some Ham-widow's Drake gear to peddle,
and one foot already in the grave themselves, and averse to eBay coz
they're techno-phobic where 'puters and the 'net are concerned (not
that there is anything wrong with any of that, of course (for the
record, I'm 53) ;-)
We also ALL know that THOSE Hamfest INSIDERS will get the first look
at what is available at those 'fests, and very likely be able to
snare the best offerings, off the tailgate of some pick-up truck,
before the gates ever open to the 'fest, and before the rest of us
great-unwashed-masses even gets a look at what might have been
available otherwise (the early bird gets the worm, and the rest of us
worms get the bird, so-to-speak).
But anyone can play! You just have to get up early... it's not fun
getting up at 4:30 AM, but if you want the bargins, that's how you get
them. As you note, it's not a secret, it just takes effort.
eBay levels the playing field.
To a point, that's true (see below)
The reason I am tossing out my 2-cents+ worth is that I take mild
exception to those who rather than accept that there are multiple
differences of perspective on this topic, prefer to question the
intelligence and / or morals of those who differ with their own. That
part is the hooey that has prompted my comments on THIS topic.
I have a total of 28 eBay transactions dating back to 2001.
397 for me.
The majority of those eBay transactions were PURCHASES
Same here. It's a dangerous place to surf, isn't it! :-)
On the other hand successful Ebaying takes work too. Learning about
sniping, checking frequently for new Buy It Now listings.. much the same
effort that goes into successful 'festing.
Use them both and enjoy the best of both worlds!
73 and thanks for your comments
