Thanks, Evan. As a matter of fact, I ordered a footswitch from Heil a
little while ago. In all fairness, my "problem" footswitch is a ten
dollar Radio Shack model which I did not modify in any way. What can I
expect, eh?
Heil claims their footswitch is well shielded and should pose no RF
pickup problems. Another reason I got it is that it incorporates two
switches. One "makes" slightly before the other. While of little use in
my barefoot TR-7 setup, this will be useful with my ancient Collins
32V-2 / R-388 AM/CW combo since I'll be able to energize the receiver
disabling relay before triggering the PTT circuit in the transmitter.
I'll report back on the RF immunity (or lack thereof) when I get the
Heil switch.
Your comment about the most vulnerable component in the Heil headset
being fashioned of Unobtanium resonated with me. That's why I now try
to find products that contain both rugged and replaceable bits. One
example is the pair of headphones I use. They're from Califone
(www.califone.com). These are the bulletproof 'phones we used in high
school language lab many decades ago. I've rolled over them with my
desk chair a few times (cheap entertainment) and they don't even show a
scratch. They're 600 ohm, sound great (really!) and have -- if ever
need be -- fully replaceable components. And you can get them for less
than ten bucks from school outfitters (like, umm,
www.schooloutfitters.com).
Your DJ headset is another wise and durable buy.
