Hi George,
I'd first check the bias voltage, is it set right, and does it have
ripple? Bad filters in the bias section of the supply can do that. The
VOX ctrls do interact, you've probably found that out, takes some fiddling
sometimes to get them right.
Hope that helps, there are other things, but that's a good start for
me.

I have a T-4XB I have restored. Works great except for CW keying. It will
continue to key while key is open. VOX works great on SSB. I have tried a
6FQ7 in place of 6EV7 with same results. Any thoughts?
