The crystals for ALL 4 Series transmitters and receivers are HC-6/U
style, and are therefore physically identical.

The R-4 used a tube type Band Oscillator, and as such the crystals were
specified for Parallel resonance with a 32 pF load, which was the
standard of the day.

The T-4X(any) and R-4A - R-4C ALL used a transistor Band Oscillator, and
Series Resonant crystals.

So yeah, the crystals for the R-4 ONLY are unique, electrically. In
actuality though, the crystals are interchangeable, since a crystal of
the "wrong" type will typically oscillate within a kHz or two of the
"right" one, well within the adjustment range of the Drake dial mechanism.

If you want to be able to switch bands and have the dial be at the
calibration mark on each band without adjustment, you're probably going
to have to order a full set of crystals from ICM. Almost every crystal
I see is a kHz or two off marked frequency due to 40 years of aging,
which unfortunately is neither linear, nor consistent!

Hi Bill,
No the xtals used in the R-4 have a wider pin spacing than those used in the R-4C. 73, Bob VE3XM

so crystals for the R4C will work in an older R4?
