I wish I could claim credit for that one, but the suggestion came to me years
ago from another ham who's identity is long forgotten. Perhaps from this very
list.

The last time I did the ball bearings, I cleaned as much of the old grease out
as I could with a paper towel moistened with alcohol. Then I troweled fresh
grease in between the bearings as I turned the shaft. I think I used Phil Woods
bicycle grease on that one, but it could have been TriFlow (also a bicycle
grease) as well. The results were good.

The contact between the brass main shaft and the outer shaft tube seems to
benefit from lube as well, but this requires more disassembly. I think I used
TriFlow there. Don't loosed the nut that holds the front dial on, you will have
hours of fun getting the dials lined back up right.
