Cliff -
Are you sure there are bearings missing? Should be 10 of them.
If none are missing, you may be able to just adjust the Allen head set
screw accessible from the back end of the lead screw. You'll have to
remove the back cover of the PTO to access the screw. The spring prongs
on either side must be compressed just enough to get them past the
barb. If you bend them too much, they'll break! It helps to work on
one side, and when you get it loose, stick a piece of folded paper in
there to keep it from slipping back in while you work on the other
side. If you remove V7 & V11, you can get the cover off without
removing the unit from the transmitter.
If you want to remove it, there are three spade bolts with the nuts
accessible under the chassis. You may have to move a wiring harness a
little to get to them. Protect the clear dial disk when removing the
PTO as they are NOT available except from donor units, which are very
rare. Note CAREFULLY where the three wires coming out of the PTO are
connected, probably Red, Green and Black. Best to cut them off right at
the terminal strips rather than trying to unsolder them. The insulation
is EXTREMELY heat sensitive and will curl up quickly. Be VERY careful
to not disturb any of the leads or components inside the housing.
Resist the urge to "straighten them up". The screw should be tightened
just enough to take out any play in the front bearing, it is NOT a dial
"tension" adjustment.
If any are missing, replacements are available from, Ace, True Value,
etc. They are 1/8" dia steel ball bearings.
There are some good photos at
<http://www.wb4hfn.com/DRAKE/DrakeArticles/PTO/Drake_PTO.htm>
They are of a C-Line PTO, but they are identical except for the dial
gearing on the front.
Much harder to describe than to do!!

I have a problem with the ball bearings in the main tuning dial shaft
that have fallen out.
Any ideas where to start in taking this out and fixing it? Thank you
