Paul,

You may have seen these tips which describe how to service the Drake PTO's
for the R-4 series. I am not familiar with the T4X VFO but I would imagine
they are very similar if not the same.

I have serviced both of my R4-C VFO's as per these tips and if you are very
careful it is quite an easy process and the results effective. The issue I
found on both of my R4-C's was the hardened grease in the bearings and on
the PTO screw shaft that moves the slug in and out of the coil, this can be
removed using a mild solvent (Freon type electronic board cleaner) from a
pump spray can, one that does not leave any residue. Anyhow, check both of
these articles. Also make certain the intermediate nylon gears properly mesh
and there is no free play in the main tuning shaft.
