Neil, I use the "Chemical version" of white out. Basically paint it on, wipe excess, and then as it drys, use you fingernail to "clean up" any left over splashed or smeared edges. I have done this on some pretty dingy knobs, and they end up looking great. My R4B line had it done in the early 80s and they still look great.
I have a Uniden HR2600 (why didn't Drake put FM in the TR7?) which I painted lines into the unmarked indent on the knobs.
