Entirely different receiver. Similar block diagram, but while the
'early' A (yes, there are two distinct versions of the A) is almost 100%
vacuum tubes, the C has vacuum tubes ONLY in the primary signal path RF
and IF stages, all else is solid state. The A uses L/C filters in four
bandwidths, 0.4, 1.2, 2.4 and 4.8 kHz and a noise blanker standard. The
C uses 8 pole crystal filters in the second IF, 0.250, 0.500, 1.5, 2.4
and 4 or 6 kHz, each of which is an optional accessory, along with an
optional Noise Blanker.
All that aside, the A is a very smooth receiver with excellent audio
that you can listen to all day without fatigue, as opposed to the phase
distortion and group delay of the crystal filters in the C. For
day-to-day hamming, I much prefer the B, which is essentially the late A
with a few oscillators converted to solid state. The A _WILL_
transceive with the T-4XC, ALL 4 Series units will 'mix and match' just
fine.

Can someone give me a quick comparison of the R-4A receiver with the
newer R-4C? I have access to a very nice (no cost) R-4A and am
considering mating it with my T-4XC transmitter. Are there any issues
there that I need to be aware of?
