I was thinking I'd seen that paragraph before as well. Sort of like the "do
not open: no user-serviceable parts inside". Appropriate for "the guy off
the street" but it's a challenge to we who know...

Geoff -
That statement is included in just about every Drake manual, just by
substituting the model in question.
That said, there definitely ARE places in ALL of this gear where a circuit
can be made to work with a lead in one position, but NOT in another
position, even though electrically the circuit is correct. This is
typically a factor in circuits with very low value capacitors involved,
neutralization and Carrier Oscillator balance for example. Other cases
may involve very high impedance circuits where unwanted signals or
feedback can be coupled from one area to another via a wire lead. The
AVC, detector and audio stages are examples of this kind of problem.

Here's the actual quote, from page 19 of the manual:
"CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN NOT TO DISTURB THE LEAD
DRESS IN THE SPR-4 SINCE THIS. IS CRITICAL IN
SEVERAL CIRCUITS."
