My preference is a 1 amp 12 volt transformer on the input of the 120 volt
primary and no load on the power supply.  All output voltage are then 1/10 of
the expected.  Typically anthing in backward will not get ruined by a 12 watt
input limitation.

Yes for sure with the variac if available...otherwise power it with a 100 or
150W incandescent bulb in series with the input.

If one always uses the "General Patton" power on procedure, sooner or later you
will have a pig roast on your benchtop.

The smoke test is always the most exciting part :)
Just make sure you bring it up with nothing connected to it until you're sure.
I like using a variac with the switch in the 1 1/2A fused position.  I still
have an AC3 and AC4 to check out that have been sitting around.

Thanks all for the replies, I guess I have it wired correctly and can test my
handiwork!
