Hi, Al: The U310 is the metal can version of the J310 or, should we say, the J310 is the plastic cased version of the U310.
The J310 is dirt cheap from places like Mouser. I've used the J310 in many circuits. They are relatively stable in the grounded gate configuration but it is a good idea to put a 10 to 22 Ohm resistor in series with the drain to "de-Q" the circuit at VHF and above. A small ferrite bead on the drain lead will accomplish the same thing. 73, Bob K9JU
