I bought a new TR7 transceiver from Drake when they first came out. Some time
later, static electricity took out some pin diodes and screwed up the little
green LED ALC light action when operating on 10 meters. (I had not removed the
antenna from the rig while not being used and a lightning storm knocked out the
diodes.) Consequently I sent the rig back to Drake for repairs. They did the
repair quickly and for very little cost. They called me on the phone to tell me
what they had done and told me to always disconnect the antenna when not in
use. This was not a big deal before transistors rigs hit the market. At the
same time they highly recommended I have them install the new version 2 driver
board in my radio. I was not told why this was a good idea or at least can’t
remember the reason but I did have it done. As I recall, Drake charged me very
little to have the version 2 board swapped out in my rig.

“I am working on a TR7 that the transmitter PA breaks into oscillation every
time the it is keyed. Is there a design issue with the version 1 predriver that
caused Drake to change to the version 2 board ,or should I rule it out and
focus on the PA itself?”
