Hi Rick.
It is very many years since I had (one of the first) R4Cs, but as I recall I 
hung an external variable resistor across the RX mute line to provide an 
adjustable level of sidetone monitoring of the transmitted signal. I cannot 
remember what value of pot I used, probably a few K. A look at the circuit 
duagram and a bit of experimentation should help. Yoi do not want too high a 
level of mute sensitivity, as it will take too long for the receiver to recover 
when coming back onto receive.  I fitted the pot into an old 35mm film can, 
with a couple of flying leads. Try it.



  When using the C-line on CW should you put the R4C on external mute and use 
the sidetone or can you without damaging the RC put the function switch on "ON" 
so you can monitor your actual cw signal.  The sidetone is not pleasant. Thank
