Also, BTW, stereo had not been invented when these plugs were first used. There contacts (poles) are referred to as tip, ring & sleeve from the telephone industry. They were used extensively in WWII and later for microphone plugs and were purposely made different so as not to be confused with earphone plugs which are(were) PL-55 plugs.
