Evan is correct. I have tried many different speakers, most speakers
designed for high power are not very efficient and while they will handle
more watts, the SPL/1w is low.
The "Collins" replacement speaker from the link is rated at only 7W. On the
surface that sounds good, maybe means "more efficient", maybe not. One
concern is the "whizzer" cone. The original Collins speakers did not have
one. My hope is that the whizzer cone won't be very effective since I don't
want high frequencies above 4-6kc, they just provide more noise and QRM.

I ordered one to see how it will perform.

We'll see.

Parts Express has or had another better-than-original speaker that fits the
MS-4 cabinet. Unfortunately I can't find details of the one I bought a few
years ago after it was recommended on one of these lists. The price was
lower than this one, maybe half.

Fellow enthusiasts,

I've been very please with the MS-4 speakers that I own, and putting
acoustical foam inside the cabinet makes them sound even better. If one
were to select an alternate speaker for mounting inside the MS-4 cabinet, it
won't necessarily have better fidelity and less distortion. Why? Some of
the speakers I've tried have had maximum power rating of 20-50 watts. When
used with a TR-7, I found that I had to run the audio gain quite high, in
some instances at the 3 o'clock position, since the speakers were not
necessarily efficient. As one approaches the maximum output of an audio
amp, sometimes the distortion level becomes annoying. Your results might
vary.

Enjoy those Drakes.

73,

Evan, K9SQG

Surplus Sales of Nevraska has a Collins replacement
speaker that fits the MS-4 cabinet. I have replaced one of my
MS-4 speakers with the unit. To me, it sounds more "mellow"
than the original speaker used by Drake. It has a massive
magnet.
