I believe you're supposed to be using the DRBD module from within the
kernel source tree (Debian backported DRBD into their Squeeze kernel).

I had bad luck building the out-of-tree module for a newish kernel
recently, as well.

Yes, Debian comes with 8.3.7.
However I can compile 8.3.8 no problem,
but not 8.3.10 so I'm just wondering...

Same problem here.

- Xen Dom0 does not work fully in newer kernels
- newer DRBD seems not to work with kernel 2.6.32

A change from Xen to KVM is not an option for me, so I use DRBD 8.3.7 in a conservative way (Primary/Secondary), no life migration.
