I think Jeremy was trying to setup LVM on /dev/drbd0 and /dev/drbd1 not on the 
physical device.

If so what you might be missing is the filter you need to modify (LVM) to 
recognize the DRBD devices as physical volumes after running pvcreate 
/dev/drbdX.  That can be found here in the archived v8.3 DRBD Users Guide:
