I had to wipe the partition on the diskless machine, re-create the meta
data (drbdadm md-create ...) and attach afterwards.

It seems your backing block device of the secondary node is no more
attached to the DRBD device (and so not synchronized)
Check your log files to know why.
You can try on your secondary node:
$ drbdadm attach <ressource>
If it does not fix the issue, check your log files
