I just applied Laurent's patch for the DSI panels in panel-simple.
In another patch-set posted as part of a bridge update I used
DRM_MODE_CONNECTOR_DPI as the default for all panels in panel-simple
that did not have any connector type specified.
I think this matches what you suggest above.
