As you requested here is one working story ;-)

My system is a 2x200MMX, 96Mb Voodoo 3 2000 pci, prebiously had 3d
working in RH6.2 with /dev/3dfx, since I upgraded to RH7 and due to lack
of time I didn't have 3d working, but today I decided to download v0.7
and install it on top of 4.0.3.

Well, the result is that everything worked just out of the box, my
kernel is 2.4.4-ac9 (I upgrade fairly frequent, do I need to rebuild
tdfx from v0.7 or can I stick to kernel version?) and prebiously when I
tried enabling DRI in XFree I had problems when changin to VCs, but now
they are solved, gears gives me 28fps in windowed mode at
1152x968@16bits, and exactly the same at full screen :-?.

When I run any 3d hack of xscreensaver it seems that the alfa is a bit
higher, and it's restored when it exits. And I can run ONE gears in
windowed mode 3d accelerated, but when I start a second gears both
switch to software rendering, dropping to 6-8 fps the FIRST one started
and 3-4 the second one. If I close the second one, then the first one
switch to 3d accelerated mode, but if I close the first one first, then
the second one sticks to software rendering. So my question is: is this
the desired behaviour?

But I have to thank you guys ;-)
