If one can get it.  It seems to me one would have to do much begging
and grovelling to get such a document, even if the intention to make
a DRI driver for the chipset is totally genuine.  Which is why I applaud
Matrox for being so progressive, wrt releasing its chip specs (after proper
registeration
with its website, of course ;) )

Or, why not scrap XFree86 altogether?  I know the DRI goal was to add 3D
rendering to the XFree server, but that just adds complexity to the initial
framework, IMO.
The X server code was already big enough before the DRI ever took shape...and
it was
initially designed as a 2D renderer.

Pro:  the newbie learning curve would be restricted to 3D issues.
Con:  it's a massive redesign.  It may be too late to do this.

Then again, just my 0.02$ USD.
