The Mesa demo programs aren't included in XFree86 either.  Neither are
some of the other device drivers like the Glide-Voodoo1/2 drivers, GGI,
Win32, etc.

If you get/build GLUT yourself you really don't need stand-alone Mesa.

Yes.  Keith's recently made a mesa-4-0-branch in the DRI tree in
order to bring Mesa 4.0 into DRI/XFree86.

No, but it slowed things down a bit.  All the former VA people are
interested
in seeing DRI move forward, but work will probably be done on a
volunteer basis.

I guess I could.  The DRI compilation guide mentions the fact that you
don't
need to install stand-alone Mesa if you install XFree86 4.x.
