That was me. I had enabled some of the new kernel debugging options, including CONFIG_DEBUG_SLAB and CONFIG_DEBUG_IOVIRT. After recompiling without these enabled, it works fine without the oops. I'm now running 2.4.12 and I haven't tried this with 2.4.10, but that was the first kernel to offer these options, I think.
