ATI seem to release programming information about their products to
individuals, rather than make them publicly available.  They actually have
been making 8500 information available to opensource ppl since prior to the
release of the product, and (as I've just learned) have put together a
semi-complete reference 3d driver for the card.  All this and more is
available through their developer relations program.  

I've got a pretty-close-to-fully-functional tcl driver now, need to do some
work on correctness and then look at optimizations.  I'd like to get the
source out fairly quickly - once it's ok'd by ATI and correct, I'd like to do
the final bugfixing & tuning on sourceforge.
