No, running as root should have no difference whatsoever. Surely the problem is that /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL is being picked before /usr/lib/libGL. Now to know why you need to make some further investigations on the ldconfig and ld.so manpages and check with your system configuration. I'm sorry that can't help you more, but at least you know what the problem is and how to circunvent it for the time being, allowing you to fully enjoy the (yet rather limited) capabilities of the mach64 DRI driver.
