The latest official releases of X we've shipped are 4.1.0 with
Mesa 3.4.2, so whatever you change is not likely to affect us.
I've looked through several other mainstream distros, and I do
not believe anyone has shipped anything yet in an official
capacity using Mesa 4.0, XFree86 4.2.0.

You may want to contact other distro maintainers perhaps however.

It would be nice if this can be fixed the proper way as you
recommend, if possible.
