Tried that and rebuilt/reinstalled.  It started up and the important
chunks of my log are at the end of this message.  Things look okay until
I do a glxinfo.  When I do that, the lower few lines of my gnome terminal
window clear.  After this point, no accelerated functions seem to occur.
Text doesn't scroll, glxgears gives a blank window--new text giving the 
frame count doesn't scroll, but the new line gets drawn on top of the old
line.  Things that don't accelerate (window borders, titlebars, etc.) get
drawn, but backgrounds, text, solid areas, are left to their own devices.
I switched out of X to a VC and back again.  This normally trashes video
memory and forces a redraw.  The first half happened, but all that got 
redrawn was the window borders and the titlebar.

I never saw as much as a single triangle. :(

Oh, the log, below, is from a 1024x768 run, but the initial run where 
these errors occured was at 640x480--I wanted there to be plenty of
memory for 3D. :)
