Ack,  I'll have to retract both the pro and con. I forgot that I was 
working
from a fresh src tree that didn't have Michel's indirect buffering and XV
dma fixes that are required for stable XV with SMP linuxppc. Stablility
with SMP linuxppc kernels requires disabling XV dma and forcing
PCI mode. With the patches performance and stability are
back where they were before.
