I use :0.0 . I'm running 'xdm' standalone. Afterwards I start the X server with '-query quickstep'. This is how I lernt to know X quite a few years ago and somtimes I love to stick to old habits ;-) As far as I know DRI first looks for a valid device behind /dev/dri/card0 on the local filesystem.
