Have you tried comparing the performance between dri / windows with something like rage tweak to disable the hyperz stuff in the windows driver?
From what I recall (messing with RTCW, though more by observing the cg_drawfps output at specific map points than benchmark like repeated demos) they are pretty much on par if you do that.
