I have a Radeon 9500 running on a VIA P4PA motherboard (AGP 4X). I have to load agpgart with agp_try_unsupported=1 and that loads it fine.
Based on the PCI ID from the XFree86 log, you have a Radeon 9000. If you thought you were buying a Radeon 9500, you got a much lesser card. Your AGP problem may be solved by a 2.6.0-test kernel, but I'm not sure. You might look into that. The VIA Pentium 4 chipsets aren't very well supported in any way, as far as I know.
I'm currently using the radeon-20030902-linux.i386.tar.bz2 drivers, XFree86 4.3.0, and kernel 2.4.22.
As Michel mentioned, you need the r200 driver. This also sounds very similar to the problem being discussed in the "radeon error" thread.
