Hm, I'm just passing through (heard 4.4 is almost ready, been wondering if it'd
fix this, actually) -- this sounds a *lot* like my troubles getting glx to
actually produce output and not freeze my box.

In my case - FreeBSD 5.1-RELEASE, stock DRI modules, clean builds of XFree86
4.3.0 from ports would produce a build where glxinfo reported fine, but any
attempt to actually run a glx app would produce a black window, and some
interesting slow freezes/lockups of the X server. (Not always total lockups,
but it's hard to say when the keyboard freezes and you're already freaking out
because you're going to lose your uptime and whatever you had open. ;))
Recovering a copy of the mga_hal_drv.o installed with 4.2.0 (back when the Ports
makefile would still give you the option of installing with the HAL), used in
concert with the XFree86 mga driver, produced a system that can display 3D
without crashing... Though the lighting in QuakeForge will start to look odd
after 30 seconds of play.

I'm as confused as everyone else is, especially as so many people told me I
certainly wouldn't/didn't need the HAL...
